History


SCAD was founded in 1978 by Paula S. Wallace, Richard Rowan, May Poetter and Paul Poetter. In the spring of 1979, SCAD purchased and renovated the Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory to serve as the first classroom and administration building, . At that time the school offered eight majors. The first graduate, Julianne Lee, received a degree in May 1981. In 1982 the students number increase more than 500 students, .
In 2002, SCAD acquired the former Lacoste School of the Arts.
SCAD-Lacoste is located in Provence, in the South of France.
In 2003, the university launched the SCAD e-Learning program, which offers undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates fully online. During the 2007-2008 academic year, nearly 2,000 students were enrolled in at least one of the 170 courses offered via SCAD-eLearning; a 64 pecent increase vs. the prior year.
In 2005, SCAD opened a campus near the
Woodruff Arts Center and the High Museum of Art on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. SCAD-Atlanta opened its doors offering 11 majors to 77 students.
In February 2009, SCAD announced that a new campus was under construction in Hong Kong in Fall 2010.
